It’s Not Just Hot Flushes

A couple of years ago I started getting a ringing sound in my ears. Not all the time but from time to time it was there. Was I imagining it? “Are you sure you can’t hear anything!!!????” I asked my family, exasperated. In typical “me” fashion, I started my research. Turns out that “tinnitus” can be a symptom of perimenopause. Along with around 40 other symptoms…

When menopause is talked about, it’s often referred to as “being on the change”. People tend to associate it with hot flushes, night sweats and mood swings. They might mention loss of libido and when women’s periods stop. These are symptoms of how a lady’s body might change during their perimenopause years. But there are many many others. For example, along with hot flushes, some women experience cold flushes – where they just cannot get warm for anything! They might get shivery and need to put on more layers (which they may then have to take off again later when the hot flush creeps in).

Another symptom that I’ve had to deal with has been itchy skin! Oh my goodness, it can drive me crazy! I have to keep my nails short to stop me from scratching my legs raw. Other symptoms that are common are thinning hair, skin outbreaks, sleep problems, restless legs, vaginal dryness, palpitations, high blood pressure, increased UTIs, slowed metabolism, muscle aches and pains….and that’s just the physical symptoms.

Psychological symptoms can impact women just as much if not more than the physical. Low mood, anxiety, low self esteem, mood swings, loss of libido, depression ……I mean it’s hardly surprising when there’s all the other symptoms going on, that it will affect our mood – but it can be incredibly debilitating. And can affect our relationships with our friends and loved ones - and impact our whole lives.

Then there’s brain fog. Have you ever been stuck for a word – it’s just gone, right? I mean, I knew the word, I had it in my head, I was about to say it and…..gone! What the hell is going on, right?! I went into the kitchen for a reason, I know I did…but I honestly have no idea what that reason was one minute later…

Living with perimenopause symptoms can be so tough. And the world needs to know that “It’s not just hot flushes”. Only with greater awareness of the possible symptoms can we begin to understand and help us ladies more. Many women are put on antidepressants when in fact they may just need to replace their hormones, or make positive changes to their mindset and lifestyle that would make all the difference!
